= Training Opportunity: Assessing Cookstove Performance in the Field =

Is your stove project ready to conduct the Controlled Cooking Test (CCT) or Kitchen Performance Test (KPT) to quantify the fuel use of your stove in the field? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Winrock International (Winrock) are pleased to announce this second call for applications in their series of field stove performance training and testing opportunities.

In 2013, the USEPA and Winrock, through contracts with Aprovecho Research Center and Berkeley Air Monitoring Group, provide support for 3-4 organizations to conduct either the CCT or KPT to evaluate the field performance of their stove.

The primary objective of this capacity building initiative is to help cookstove organizations obtain field data on fuel use to inform and improve stove design, performance and use. In some cases, also emissions, including both health and climate-related pollutants will be assessed. Please note, the training will be conducted in English. Upon completion of the workshop, the selected organization will then receive extended technical support for an in-depth field study to quantify their stove’s fuel use in the field and gain the skills to evaluate new designs in the future. Applications must be received by March 1st.

= Afghanistan: Standardization in the Afghan Electricity Sector =

Electric power systems are considered the backbone of a country in terms of economical and industrial development. They should be in compliance with national and international standards, provide quality electricity to customers and function in a sustainable manner. Since 2010, GIZ has been supporting the Afghan National Standards Authority (ANSA) in its effort to improve the electro-technical standardization process. One result of the cooperation has been that Afghanistan for the first time has adopted international standards by establishing a national electro-technical committee. 

Currently, 43 standards are available for public and private sectors with regards to cables, insulators, CFL bulbs, plugs, sockets, energy meter and protective standards against electric shocks. Another 107 standards covering the areas of power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy and consumer standards are currently processed by the committee and expected for approval latest by the end of 2013.

The main purpose of publishing new standards is that the implementation will increase efficiency by minimizing maintenance and repair, reducing energy losses in the power system and network. All these changes will ultimately lead to an increase in revenue for electric utilities.

= Launch of Solar Guidelines India =

In line with vision of providing investor friendly mechanism, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Minister of New and Renewable Energy recently inaugurated the web based platform ‘Solar Guidelines’ on November 05, 2012.

The platform has been developed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH operating on behalf of German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

The Solar Guidelines is a tool which has been developed to create more transparency in the Indian solar market and its stakeholders. The basis for the development is the long-term experience of the developers gained in successful European solar markets and with similar tools. The focus of the tool is creation of awareness for the Indian solar market to attract national and international investment capital. The tool provides crucial information for the different phases of project development, financing, operation and maintenance. It is available for stakeholders in a detailed and structured manner and aims at supporting timely implementation of the solar projects as well as support achieving the solar targets set by the Government of India.

After the successful implementation of Phase I, focused on projects proposed for development in the State of Rajasthan, the Solar Guidelines will be transferred to Solar Energy Cooperation of India (SECI). During Phase II, until 2014, the tool will be developed for additional ten States.
