Around 50 participants from different international organisations, research institute and consulting firms came together to discuss the importance of bringing sustainable wood energy into the international focus. On the first day,the participants mainly focused on the challenges of incorporating sustainable wood energy into the value chain.The challenges are as follows:
- Wood energy is a cross cutting issue and therefore it is a problem of many departments but at the same time not of all departments.
- In developing countries context, wood energy is considered to be a rural and dirty fuel. This negative perception attached with wood energy makes it unpopular among donors and results in low funding for wood energy projects

- While promoting wood energy, there is a fear that it could interfere withe the food energy securtiy

Wood energy in the European context is seen as an opportunity while in the developing countries context is seen as a rural and dirty fuel. This negative perception attached with the wood energy is an impeding factors while competing for donor fundings.
