Rubrique 2
Remote Sensing/UAV
Efforts to increase knowledge about the water cycle as well as the best use and management of water resources are often hampered by the lack of sufficient data. By contrast, large data-sets are available online, mostly remotely-sensed information derived from satellite-based sensors. The Orientation on Remote Sensing for water experts describes pitfalls and aspects to consider when weighting up a decision on the use of remote-sensing. The comprehensive World Bank Report Earth Observation for Water Resources Management introduces EO products and sheds light on the strengths and limitation of EO in water management. The GIZ Themenforum Fernerkundung provides a platform for GIZ remote sensing and UAV practitioneers to exchange their ideas and experiences
Water Information Systems
University of Applied Sciences Koblenz and GIZ elaborated a portfolio analysis on water information systems, such as GIS applications, simulations, decision support systems, flood early warning systems and web portals used by partner institutions of GIZ in the water sector. It descibes constraints, data management process and consulting approaches applied by GIZ water projects.
IT Security in the Water and Wastewater Industry
Against the backdrop of increasing cyber attacks, IT security assumes top priority for the operators of critical infrastructures. DWA therefore have developed the industry-specific IT Security Standard for the Water/Wastewater Industry, which offers water utilities and wastewater companies a tool to protect their IT systems against cyber crime.

Rubrique 3
Water 4.0
GIZ participates in the Working Group Water 4.0 of German Water Partnership (GWP). Water 4.0 puts digitization and automation at the strategy for resource-efficient, flexible and competitive water management. In doing this, Water 4.0 incorporates the same main features and terms of INDUSTRY 4.0, such as "networking of machines, processes, storage systems and resources", "smart grids", "Internet of things and services" and brings them together in a systemic water management context.
Selected Project Examples
Following projects present examples on how digital tools are used in GIZ water projects.
For further projects examples, see the full list of digital projects in the GIZ water sector:
- List of digital projects in the GIZ water sector (available soon)
Innovative Ideas
As part of the GIZ innovation fund process, innovative ideas were developed by GIZ water and waste management projects on how digital tools can be used to increase the effectiveness of water projects and programmes.
