The „Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority“ (EWURA) is the economic regulator of the downstream petroleum sub-sector (importation, marketing and distribution).
Since the year 2000, Tanzania has a lieberalized petrol market. EWURA monitors import, wholesale and pump prices and makes all information available to the public twice a month via newsletter ads and internet. EWURA accurately examines possible defects of the liberalized market and also publishes corresponding documents.
EWURA gives concessions / licenses to wholesale vendors and retail vendors. Every vendor has the obligation by law to submit their prices to EWURA.
There are no subsidies for petrol in Tanzania. About 30% of the retail pump price are taxes and levies.
