Happy Birthday Energypedia!
On the 1st April 2012, energypedia with a vision of borderless and unrestricted knowledge exchange came into existence. Since then, the continuous support and encouragement from our users has helped us to expand our networks and grow into a successful knowledge sharing platform. We would like to thank all our users for their continuous support and would like to celebrate our Two Year Anniversary with you. During this time frame, we have grown from 1821 registered users to 3314 registered users and our knowledge pool continuously expands with 1525 articles currently from 722 articles.
Energypedia is a nonprofit organization and we depend on our donors for funds. Therefore, please support Energypedia by donating. You can donate by clicking on the DONATE button on our homepage. Welcome Ranisha to the Energypedia Team
We are delighted to welcome our new intern Ranisha Basnet. Ranisha graduated from the Jacobs University Bremen with a Bachelors in Integrated Environmental Studies. Her thesis was titled “Electricity Market of Nepal: Case Study in Kathmandu”. Ranisha will support Energypedia with developing the platform further and will be involved in community management at Energypedia.

Renewable Energy Project Resource Center now Online
In partnership with Energypedia, the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank has developed the online Renewable Energy Project Resource Center (REPRC) to provide documents that seek to facilitate the speeding-up and scaling-up of renewables projects in developing countries.
The REPRC complements other tools now available to governments and developers by focusing on working level project documents such as samples of Terms of Reference (ToRs), procurement documents, surveys and questionnaires, economic and financial analyses, and case studies. Such documents are rarely disseminated by the institutions that generate them, which constitutes a missed opportunity for building on previous knowledge and experience. Having such documents readily available, by contrast, can reduce transaction costs such as those associated with having to create new TOR or contract templates from scratch. The REPRC brings these documents together under a simple interface that will significantly improve the quality, ease, and access to information for the global renewable energy development community. The REPRC is hosted on Energypedia’s open wiki-based platform, allowing anyone to easily locate documents through browse and search functions, and to add new ones, thus contributing to a shared body of knowledge. The platform also allows for facilitated interactions through dedicated spaces for discussion and private messages to other users.
The current document archive builds on the World Bank’s RE Toolkit, developed in 2006 to provide World Bank staff and partners access to a broad set of resources on renewable energy such as issue notes, case studies and TORs. Going forward, information will be updated and added, building on the growing experience of the World Bank Group as well as other development agencies as they support renewable energy projects in developing countries. Current partners include the Public-Private Partnership Infrastructure Resource Center (PPPIRC), the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), and Open EI.org.

BREG-MES 2014 Symposium: Innovating Energy Access for Remote Areas

Regional Conference on Scaling Up: Role of the Private Sector
On 13 and 14 May 2014, the UNDP will be partnering with the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Islamic Development Bank to host a regional conference in Istanbul which will look at how the private sector can help bring about sustainable energy solutions in Europe and Central Asia. The event expands on the UN Secretary-General’s initiative on Sustainable Energy for All, which was launched in 2011 which consists of three primary goals to be reached by 2030:
- Ensure universal access to energy
- Double the share of renewable energy
- Double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency
The conference aims to bring together business leaders from around the region with the main focus of identifying new investment opportunities and partnerships.
Carbon Mitigation Highlights Newsletter
For almost 10 years, GIZ in collaboration with Perspectives Climate Change published the newsletter “CDM Highlights”. It presented monthly updates on the most relevant aspects of the CDM world. The downturn of carbon markets and the dynamic character of climate policy, however, has led to the decision to look beyond the CDM. In their new “Carbon Mitigation Highlights”-newsletter, every 6-8 weeks GIZ provides the latest information on mitigation and market topics, both inside and outside the UNFCCC scope, including regional and supra-regional developments as well as information on approaches other than markets. 7 Million Premature Deaths Annually Linked to Air Pollution
In new estimates released on 25 March, the World Helath Organisation (WHO) reports that in 2012 around 7 million people died - 1 in 8 of total global deaths – as a result of air pollution exposure. This finding more than doubles previous estimates and confirms that air pollution is now the world’s largest single environmental health risk. The new data reveal a stronger link between both indoor and outdoor air pollution exposure and cardiovascular diseases, such as strokes and ischaemic heart disease, as well as between air pollution and cancer. Much of the burden results from burning of fossil fuels, and the new figures underline the opportunity for more sustainable development choices to simultaneously save lives and mitigate climate change.

Last Mile Distribution of Off-grid Solar Products: Support Needs, Concerns & Opportunities
The recent explosive growth of the off-grid solar lighting sector affirms the potential for this technology to substantially increase access to a basic modern energy service in underserved communities. To ensure that market interventions support rather than impede market growth, donors and their development partners need to better understand the dynamics of this rapidly changing market. Toward this goal, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) convened a workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in December 2013. The objective was to build an accurate and up-to-date understanding of the state of last mile distribution efforts in the dynamic, off-grid lighting market as a means to inform and improve the effectiveness of support efforts.

New IIED Report on Inclusive Green Growth in Zambia
The 2012 Rio+20 Summit concluded that green growth is best defined and tailored according to the individual country context. This report describes Zambia’s approach to develop an Inclusive Green Growth Strategy under its Sixth National Development Plan. The Zambian definition for inclusive green growth is ‘inclusive development that makes sustainable and equitable use of Zambia’s natural resources within ecological limits’. The report describes the changing international policy and financial context for inclusive green growth, reports on a workshop facilitated by IIED, and proposes initial steps to develop its operational Strategy.

IISD Publications on Energy Subsidies in India
For those interested in energy subsidies, the IISD Global Subsidies Initiative is sharing three new publications that focus on India. "Understanding Fossil-Fuel Subsidies in India: Question and Answers" is an illustrated introduction to the issue and gives a good overview for readers who are new to the topic.

The"India Energy Subsidy Review" is a biannual publication that surveys economic and policy developments affecting India’s subsidized fuel markets (diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, kerosene and natural gas). A similar publication covering Indonesia will be published next month.

Thirdly, IISD recently collaborated with the CUTS Institute for Regulation and Competition on a paper that examines the social, political, and environmental aspects of subsidized electricity for farmers in India titled "Balancing State, Utility and Social Needs in Agricultural Electricity Supply. The case for a holistic approach to reform".

IEA starts Publication Series that provides Practical Guidance
The International Energy Agency (IEA) announced a new publication series known as the How2Guides. Building on the Agency's global energy technology roadmap series, each publication aims to provide practical guidance on the development of a technology specific roadmap or strategy at the national or regional level. The first guide in the new series, the “How2Guide for Wind Energy”, was released at the Annual Conference of the European Wind Energy Association in Barcelona, Spain. The paper offers a menu of recommendations on policy, technical and financing options for deployment of utility-scale wind energy installations and seeks to provide an overview of potential barriers to wind deployment, as well as possible actions for addressing them – taking into account local conditions, drivers and barriers, including public acceptance issues.

Advisory Paper on PV Grid Integration
PV GRID, the transnational collaborative effort under the umbrella of the Intelligent Energy Europe programme, recently released an advisory paper for PV grid integration. This advisory paper aims at providing an overview of the issues and barriers that need to be addressed in order to enhance the distribution grid hosting capacity for PV and other distributed generation. To this purpose, barriers are classified as either cross-cutting challenges or specific barriers, depending on whether they have an overarching, system-wide character or rather focus on one single issue such as curtailment, self-consumption or storage. Finally, a set of preliminary recommendations on how to overcome these issues is presented, allowing for the implementation of the identified technical solutions.
