New Mobility Portal now Online!
Energypedia is pleased to announce the launch of a new portal on Mobility. The Mobility Portal is designed to inform users about crosscutting issues in energy and transport including climate change, energy efficiency, environmental pollution, health risks and sustainability.
It features articles on environmentally sustainable mobility and the effects of unsustainable transport practices on the environment.
Thank you to energypedia user Bui Anh Ngoc whose enthusiastic contribution of articles has made it possible to launch the Mobility Portal! We invite you, our users to not only read but also contribute as authors to the development of the portal.
Less than 100 days until the EcoMobility World Festival
Last Thursday marked the 100 day countdown to the kickoff of EcoMobility World Festival and EcoMobility 2013 Suwon congress, taking place this September in Suwon, South Korea. The city of Suwon – home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hwaseong Fortress - promises to deliver the first real-life example of an ecomobile neighborhood in action.
For an entire month, the residents of Haenggung-dong neighborhood will adopt an ecomobile lifestyle, one which prioritizes socially inclusive and environmentally-friendly transport options, including walking, cycling, and wheeling. This unique event, co-organized by ICLEI and UN-Habitat, will invite participants to immerse themselves in an ecomobile environment, demonstrating the benefits that can be realized in urban areas by rethinking the fundamentals of transport systems.
The EcoMobility 2013 Suwon congress will take place at the Festival from 01 – 04 September, providing a unique opportunity to attend the only transportation conference to combine challenging discussions with a real-life implementation of an ambitious EcoMobility project. Congress call for contributions closes on 31 May!
By offering an engaging program of congress seminars, workshops, an ecomobile vehicle exhibition, vehicle test tracks and a spectacular display of Korean cultural events, the Festival will serve as a global showcase of future mobility for NGOs, businesses, universities, cyclist and pedestrian associations and governments.
Amaray Magazine - Energising Development Peru
Amaray is a magazine developed by the GIZ Energising Development Project in Peru (EnDev-Peru). The publication seeks to promote access to basic energy needs, especially in rural and isolated areas. Amaray contains articles and photographs that present private and public actions, international cooperation initiatives, interviews with experts, and a photographic portfolio, among other things.
Amaray is produced and printed in Spanish for Peru, but also available in English in PDF format. The magazine is distributed free. Take a look at the latest edition of Amaray which is focused on the topic of productive use of energy.
IEA Report: Tracking Clean Energy Progress 2013
The new report "Tracking Clean Energy Progress 2013" shows how current trends compare against requirements in the 2°C climate scenario, technology by technology. It highlights where progress has been made, how near term carbon dioxide mitigation can be achieved and what policies are necessary.
You can also take part in a free webinar on Thursday June 20, 15h30-16h30 CEST (Paris time) where the main findings and conclusions from the report will be presented by IEA director Didier Houssin and the report's lead authors.
IOB Study: Renewable Energy - Access and Impact
The new IOB study on Renewable Energy - Access and Impact presents a comprehensive overview of evaluative literature and reports regarding the impact of renewable energy interventions on the livelihoods of end-users, being either individuals, households or communities in rural areas and the urban periphery in developing and middle income countries.
The interventions encompass the use of improved cooking stoves, biogas digesters, solar home systems (including solar lamps), and hydro powered mini-grids. Some conclusions included are that the impact of interventions in energy sources and devices is determined by human rather than by technological design features. And while improved stoves and (renewable) electricity have a positive impact on health, the impact on the environment is at best modest.
ESMAP Report: Results-Based Financing In The Energy Sector
This report from ESMAP identifies the circumstances when results-based financing (RBF) approaches might be an appropriate energy sector intervention in developing countries, especially to promote energy access and energy efficiency. The fundamental idea of RBF approaches is that payments that would otherwise be made automatically are made contingent on delivery of a pre-agreed (set of) result(s), with achievement of the result(s) being subject to independent verification.
This report aims to help fill the gap. Its novelty rests on a conceptual examination of RBF mechanisms to derive insights on when and under which circumstances they are desirable, and the application of these insights to the energy access and energy efficiency contexts. The report is focused on individuals and organizations who are considering whether an RBF approach would be a sensible way to deliver some specific goods or services to help meet a defined public policy goal.
