ASEANRenewables.info Goes Online!
The ASEAN Renewables (ARES) Online Information Platform on renewable energy (RE) in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), has been finalized. The platform was developed in order to enhance the effectiveness of knowledge sharing and information dissemination within the RE sector of the ASEAN region. ASEAN Renewables is an informative website of the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE), developed with the support of ASEAN Renewable Energy Support Program. The platform features announcements of RE news and events in the region, a database of reports and studies on RE in the ASEAN and its member states, RE country profiles of all member states, links to relevant actors in the ASEAN RE sector as well as an ASEAN RE business directory which is currently under development.
Information Platform on Energy Efficiency in Buildings
In the short and medium term, energy efficiency is the biggest, fastest, and most cost-effective option for saving energy and mitigating climate change. Energy efficiency in buildings will especially play a major role as this has the potential to contribute up to 38% to the necessary reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. However, while information on technologies and policies is abundant, it is scattered loosely and decision-makers find it difficult to access. For this reason, the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy created the web-based information platform www.bigee.net.
The platform supports decision-making and its implementation by presenting comprehensive, independent, and high-quality information on energy efficiency in buildings and appliances. It informs users about energy efficiency options and savings potentials, net benefits and how policy can support achieving those savings. Basic information is paired with context-specific recommendations and examples of good practice. To ensure a targeted, quick and easy access, information about buildings, appliances and policies is presented in three different intuitive guides.
The platform is the major product of the project bigEE – “bridging the information gap on Energy Efficiency in buildings” – initiated by the Wuppertal Institute and currently funded by the German government under the International Climate Initiative.
EnDev Reaches its 10 Millionth Beneficiary
The international partnership Energising Development (EnDev) supports communities in accessing energy services in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In only eight years EnDev has reached ten million people at less than 20 euros per head. This experience could be used as the base to target all people without access to energy.
Since 2005 EnDev has helped:
- more than 10 million people obtain sustainable energy services in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This number is equal to the people living in Sweden or Benin;
- more than 11,000 social institutions and 24,000 small enterprises benefit from sustainable access to modern energy services;
- train 30,000 stove builders, craftsmen, vendors and solar technicians.
EnDev intends to further increase the number of people gaining sustainable access to electricity and clean and energy efficient cooking technologies to more than 14 million.
2013 Ashden Awards
The annual Ashden Awards celebrated 14 winners who were recognized for their trailblazing work in cutting carbon, reducing poverty and improving lives around the globe. Collectively they are examples that what is good for the planet is also good for people, business and economies.
This years international winners included solar lantern charity Solar Aid which was honored for its work in distributing simple study lanterns to people in rural East Africa. The charity is now the largest distributor of solar lights in Africa having sold over 500,000 lamps since 2010. The three other international winners were Impact Carbon, WWF DRC and Azuri Technologies.
The World Bank Ashden Awards for Small Island Developing States were won by Cape Verde's Cabeólica and D&E Green Enterprises of Haiti.

New ASEAN Guidelines Published
The ASEAN Guideline on Off-grid Rural Electrification Approaches builds upon experiences in the region, identifies best practices and gives concrete recommendations for the development and implementation of effective, efficient and sustainable rural electrification approaches with RE technologies. The Guideline was developed based on an inclusive stakeholder consultation process jointly conducted by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit in the framework of the Renewable Energy Support Program for ASEAN (ASEAN-RESP).
The ASEAN Guideline on Renewable Energy Support Mechanisms for Bankable Projects is the outcome from a survey that was comprehensively conducted by ASEAN-RESP. The survey observed the prevalent success factors and remaining barriers for "bankable" renewable energy projects in chosen ASEAN member states (Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand). The Guideline presents effective policy approaches and support mechanisms to improve framework conditions for positive investment decisions in the renewable energy sector.
REN21 Renewables 2013 Global Status Report
The 2013 edition of the REN21 Renewables Global Status Report (GSR) has been launched. More than 500 contributors collaborated to provide a complete and fascinating picture of the status of renewable energy markets, industry and policy worldwide. The GSR2013 again showcases an impressive increase in global capacity across all renewable energy sectors, with supporting policies spreading simultaneously. Of the 138 countries with renewables targets or policies in place, two-thirds are in the developing world. Investment in renewable energy significantly increased in developing countries in 2012 while globally it decreased due to reduced technology costs and policy instability in some industrialized countries. In 2012, an estimated 5.7 million people worldwide worked directly or indirectly in the renewable energy sector.
